The War Against the Pink Bollworm
I found the article on the problems of the pink bollworm very interesting. It might be possible to try two non-
insecticide-related methods of control. Both could be tested on a small scale and with little expense. Covering the soil with black plastic might cause the soil temperature to rise high enough to kill the worm while it is dormant, if it does not burrow too deep. Another possibility might be to test a spray that would harden the soil surface so that the worm would find it difficult to burrow. I doubt if it can stand long exposure to the weather when ready to go dormant, and it would also be subject to being eaten by birds or other insects.
