Boris Becker of West Germany was battling the flu but had little trouble with Sammy Giammalva Thursday, scoring a 6-3, 6-4 victory and advancing to the quarterfinals of the $345,000 Australian Indoor tennis tournament at Sydney, Australia.
In other matches, Paul Annacone struggled past Gary Muller of South Africa, 7-6, 7-6; Ramesh Krishnan of India beat Robert Seguso, 7-6, 6-4, and Slobodan Zivojinovic of Yugoslavia downed Christian Saceanu of West Germany, 6-3, 6-4.
Top-seeded Jimmy Connors breezed into the semifinals of the Riklis Israel Tennis Center tournament with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over unseeded Hub van Boeckel of the Netherlands at Jerusalem.
In other matches, defending champion and second-seeded Brad Gilbert beat eighth-seeded Gilad Bloom of Israel, 6-3, 6-3; fourth-seeded Peter Lundgren of Sweden defeated Craig Campbell of South Africa, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, and third-seeded Amos Mansdorf of Israel downed Wolfgang Popp of West Germany, 6-7, 6-4, 6-2.
