WASHINGTON — An unidentified young man who attended a ceremony on the White House South Lawn joined a cluster of photographers and cameramen and made it all the way to the door of the Oval Office today before he was stopped.
Liz Murphy, a White House assistant press secretary, spotted the man and demanded his identity as he tried to enter the Oval Office with photographers. President Reagan was inside, ready to pose with visiting El Salvador President Jose Napoleon Duarte.
Challenged by Murphy, the young man sheepishly turned without speaking and walked back to the driveway. He had been among the crowd of several hundred people invited to the White House to see the elaborate welcoming ceremony for Duarte.
