Ironman Triathlon : Dave Scott Scores Sixth Win as Top Rival Mark Allen Fades

Dave Scott of Davis, Calif., won his sixth Ironman Triathlon World Championship here Saturday, after rival Mark Allen faded during the marathon run.

Scott’s time for the 140.6-mile endurance test was 8 hours 34 minutes 13 seconds, about 5 1/2 minutes off his record time of 8:28:37 last year.

Allen, who had a 4 1/2-minute lead over Scott at the 16-mile mark of the 26.2-mile marathon, held onto second place with an 8:47:30 finish.

Greg Stewart of Geelong, Australia, was third in 8:58:52, with Mike Pigg of Arcata, Calif., fourth in 9:02:43. Next came Ken Glah of West Chester, Pa., in 9:05:13 and two-time winner Scott Tinley of Encinitas, Calif., in 9:08:37.

Erin Baker of Christchurch, New Zealand, was the women’s winner with a time of 9:35:24., easily shattering the 9:49:14 record set by Paula Newby-Fraser of Zimbabwe last year. Former women’s champion Sylviane Puntous of Kelowna, Canada, was second in 9:36:57, and Newby-Fraser was third in 9:40:35.

The marathon was the third event in the grueling contest. About 1,250 athletes pursuing more than $100,000 in prize money began the race Saturday morning with a 2.4-mile swim. After the swim, the triathletes took off on a 112-mile bicycle ride. The bicycle race ended, and the marathon began at the Keauhou resort.
