Anaheim : Former Patient Gets $125,000 From Doctor
An Anaheim woman agreed to accept $125,000 from a physician who she said misdiagnosed her ailment and forced her to undergo unnecessary and painful drug treatment.
Insurers for Dr. Peter Otis of Anaheim, while not acknowledging liability, agreed Tuesday to pay the money to Marion Pelcak, 68, ending a trial in Orange County Superior Court.
Pelcak said Otis mistakenly decided that she was suffering from lupus and anemia when she went to him for treatment in 1979. For 3 1/2 years, she took steroids, was given powerful chemotherapy treatments and had her spleen removed as part of the course that Otis advised. Pelcak said she recovered after she stopped going to Otis.
The trial was before Superior Judge Jerrold S. Oliver.
