Local News in Brief : Ship Collision Inquiry
The U.S. Coast Guard convened an inquiry in Long Beach on Tuesday into the Sept. 21 collision of two ships off the Santa Barbara coast, citing concern over maritime safety and the environment.
Capt. David Zawadzki said the inquiry is expected to last several months and will focus on ship traffic, port and waterway configurations, weather conditions and other factors that may have contributed to the mishap. “We will be looking at ways to enhance marine safety and environmental safety,†Zawadzki said.
The freighter Pac Baroness sank about 15 miles off Point Conception when it collided with the car-carrying ship Atlantic Wing. The Atlantic Wing was damaged but made it into Long Beach Harbor.
