World Family Planning Conference to Be Held
UNITED NATIONS — An international conference on family planning as a health measure will be held next month in Nairobi, Kenya, to seek ways to prevent the deaths of hundreds of thousands of mothers and children, officials said.
James Grant, executive director of the U.N. Children’s Fund, and George Zeidenstein of the Population Council said the meeting will be held Oct. 5-9 in the Kenyan capital. The conference will be attended by 250 delegates from 60 countries.
They said most of the deaths result from unwanted and high-risk pregnancies, particularly in developing countries where two-thirds of couples do not have access to family planning programs.
Other sponsors of the conference include the U.N. Fund for Population Activities, the World Health Organization, International Planned Parenthood Federation, the World Bank and the U.N. Development Program.
