A federal jury in Pennsylvania awarded the family of a college student who died of toxic shock syndrome four years ago $635,000 in damages from Playtex Family Products Inc. The jury deliberated about four hours over two days before finding that a defect in the company’s Playtex Super tampons contributed substantially to the June, 1983, death of Kathy Kelchner, 21, of Millville, Pa.
