The dollar rose modestly in New York against most major currencies in thin trading, as many banks balanced their foreign exchange positions to close out the month of August. In Tokyo, the dollar rose to 142.35 Japanese yen from Friday’s three-month low of 141.50 yen. Later, in European trading, it was quoted at 141.90 yen. In New York, the dollar was quoted at 142.40 yen, up from 141.88 yen late Friday. Gold prices declined to $450.25 an ounce, down from $453.25 late Friday.
