East Germany’s Anke Moehring set a world record in the 800-meter women’s freestyle at the European Swimming Championships in Strasbourg, France, with a time of 8 minutes 19.53 seconds.
The 17-year-old Moehring’s time was nearly three seconds faster than the mark set last month by Janet Evans of the United States.
Georgi Chogovadze of the Soviet Union rallied to defeat East Germany’s Jan Hampel and win the platform diving title. Chogovadze had 618.94 points, Hampel 596.94.
