Pasadena : $1-Million Gift to Caltech
Longtime Caltech supporters Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Oschin have announced that they will give $1 million to the school for research in astronomy. The money will be used by Caltech astronomers at Palomar Observatory for several projects measuring the positions, temperatures and physical properties of stars and galaxies.
The 48-inch Schmidt Telescope at Palomar, to be named the Oschin Telescope in honor of the donors, is being used in a five-year project to photograph the entire northern sky on 2,682 glass plates.
Oschin, a developer and former head of a financial corporation, is an amateur astronomer who is building a 12-inch telescope in his Palm Springs home.
