Venezuela and Colombia ordered military reinforcements to their border region as tension rose in a diplomatic standoff over a boundary dispute in the Gulf of Venezuela, newspapers in both countries reported. The Caracas newspaper El Mundo reported “intense movement of patrols†on both sides of the border. Venezuela transferred heavy artillery, tanks and F-16 fighter-bombers to bases near the frontier, according to the Maracaibo newspaper Panorama. In Bogota, El Tiempo said Colombia’s navy dispatched three missile-laden corvettes into the area.
