Matthew Margules, an 11-year-old fifth grader from Danbury, Conn., won the junior division of the All-American Soap Box Derby Saturday at Akron, Ohio.

Margules, who beat 88 other racers ages 9-12, said he raced the past two years in fiberglass shell cars, but with help from his father, switched to a wooden car for this year’s race.

“We decided that we had to build a wooden car to be really competitive,” Matthew said.
