Polls and Bork
The Gallup Poll’s finding (Part I, Aug. 9) that Americans favor by 41% U.S. Supreme Court decisions moving in a more conservative rather than liberal direction does not mean that Americans support the nomination of Judge Robert Bork to the Supreme Court. Bork is not a conservative, but a reactionary. Conservatives respect precedent, like to preserve existing conditions and will agree to gradual change. Reactionaries like Bork want to turn back the clock on abortion and civil rights.
If Gallup had sampled opinion regarding reactionary rather than conservative orientation, I’m sure most Americans, like myself, would just say no to reactionary Supreme Court decisions!
