Mickelson Is One Shot Off Lead in N.C.

PINEHURST, N.C. — Phil Mickelson of San Diego shot a one-over-par 73 in heavy rains Saturday and was one shot off the lead after the first round of the 19th Insurance Youth golf tournament on Pinehurst Country Club’s No. 7 course.
Tim Morley of Newton, Iowa, was the leader at 72, followed by Mickelson and Brian Craig of Gastonia, N.C., who had a 74. Robby Koch of Fort Worth, Tex., and Jeff Manson of Long Beach were tied for fourth at 75.
The 168 junior golfers from 44 states represent the best of a field of almost 10,000.
