Buddhist Monks in Sri Lanka

As a Sri Lankan Buddhist, I am incensed that Rone Tempest, in reporting the current demonstrations in Sri Lanka (Part I, July 29), calls the Buddhist monks “extremists.â€

In signing the “peace†treaty with Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, J.R. Jayewardene, the dictatorial president of Sri Lanka, has sold the country to the Indians. The Tamil terrorists have vowed to continue their armed fight against the Sinhalese.

There are thousands of Indian troops arriving in Sri Lanka supposedly to police the “peace†treaty. Military aid meant to kill the Sinhalese in on its way to Jayewardene from other countries.

There are only 14 million Sinhalese in the world as compared with 55 million Tamils and 500 million Indians.

The Sinhalese Buddhists have just their bare hands and their “extremist Buddhist monks.†God help them!
