Questions about the accuracy of records kept by a hazardous waste site with a history of violations prompted Santa Barbara County officials to begin spot checks of traffic entering the dump. Casmalia Resources will be subject to 12 unannounced daylong checks in the next 10 months under a plan approved by Santa Barbara County supervisors. The dump is limited to 85 truckloads of waste a day as part of an April, 1986, agreement to allow continued use of the facility as owners appeal the earlier revocation of operating permits. Dianne Guzman, county resources management director, told the supervisors she has no reason to suspect that truck counts provided by Casmalia Resources are not accurate, but recommended the spot checks because the county grand jury and other groups have questioned the company’s figures.
