Japan posted a $4.79-billion trade surplus against the United States in July, a 19% rise over the previous month despite a sharp increase in global imports, the government reported today.

Japan’s purchases from abroad shot up 20.8% in July to $12.91 billion, largely attributed to higher oil prices and a growth in motor vehicle purchases, mostly from the European Economic Community. Imports from the United States, though, fell from July, 1986, levels.
