Two San Diegans Gain in Main Event of Oceanside Surf
SAN DIEGO — Mike Lambresi of Carlsbad and Todd Martin of Cardiff won their matches in the first round of the main event of the Stubbies Pro surfing competition Thursday at Oceanside Pier.
Sixteen surfers advanced to join the top 16 seeds for today’s second round, which begins at 7 a.m.
Lambresi defeated Matt Archibold of Dana Point and Martin defeated Robbie Bain of Australia to advance to today’s round of 32. Sixteen surfers from today’s matches will advance to Saturday’s third round.
Today, Lambresi will meet Brad Gerlach of Encinitas, the 1985 Stubbies champion, and Martin must face two-time defending world champion Tom Curren, who won this tournament last year.
David Barr of Carlsbad and David Eggers of San Diego were defeated in the first round of the main event. Trevor Christ of Encinitas, Jim Palmer of Carlsbad and Rick Lasch of Del Mar all lost in the final round of preliminaries earlier Thursday.
