Wednesday night’s all-comers meet at Birmingham High seemed like a stroll in the park for Regina Jacobs. A very fast stroll.
Jacobs, this year’s The Athletics Congress champion in the 1,500 meters, placed fifth in the open 800 meters with a personal best of 2 minutes, eighth-tenths of a second.
Jacobs, of the Los Angeles Track Club, ran a 59.8 over the first 400 meters, picked up the tempo in the third 200 with a 28.7 and slowed to a 32.3 in the final 200 for a 2:00.8.
Jacobs, 23, who ran 2:06.47 as a high school senior at the Argyll Academy (now Campbell Hall) in North Hollywood in 1981, also finished second in a heat of the 400 meters, clocking 59.0.
This is the second straight year Jacobs has run a personal best in an all-comers meet at Birmingham. Last summer, she ran 4:02.6 for 1,500 meters, which ranks her fourth on the all-time U.S. women’s list.
