House Votes Ban on Sale of Toshiba Products at PXs

WASHINGTON — The House, retaliating for the sale of advanced technology to the Soviet Union, voted today to ban the sale of Toshiba Corp. products at military exchanges.
The bill, unanimously approved by the House Armed Services Committee last week, was passed by voice vote and sent to the Senate after just brief discussion.
The action follows recent revelations that Toshiba Machine Co. of Japan, in conjunction with the Norwegian Kongsberg Corp., sold the Soviets milling machines used to make submarines operate more quietly, making them harder to detect.
Rep. Dan Daniel (D-Va.) said congressional action to punish Toshiba is needed to “send a strong message to any other Toshibas” that might consider selling military-related technology to the Soviet Union.
