Hundreds of environmentalists combed East Coast beaches, asking sun and sea bathers to support clean water initiatives in their states on the first national Clean Water Day proclaimed by Congress earlier this year. More than 200 volunteers from conservation groups went blanket-to-blanket on the New Jersey shore in calling for full federal funding of the Clean Water Act and strict enforcement of laws protecting water resources. About 150 activists also rallied at Nantasket Beach, Mass.
