Unseeded Jeff Schubert of Scottsdale, Ariz. defeated No. 13-seeded Jim Nelson of Newport Beach, 6-4, 7-5, Wednesday in the only upset at the U.S. Tennis Assn. Men’s 45 Hard Court Championships at the Lindborg Racquet Club at Huntington Beach.
In other third-round matches: No. 1-seeded Gordon Davis of Van Nuys defeated Ted Munch of Orange, 6-3, 6-2; No. 2-seeded Keith Diepraam of Sugarland, Tex. defeated Bob Siska of San Francisco, 6-3, 7-5; No. 3-seeded Jim Purley of Coronado defeated Jack Allen of Tucson, 6-1, 6-2; and No. 4-seeded Len Saputo of Walnut Creek defeated Brad Traister of Beverly Hills, 6-1, 6-1.
No. 7-seeded Bob Duesler of Newport Beach, the highest seeded Orange County player, defeated Gary Chaney of Sierra Vista, Ariz., 6-3, 6-2.
