“Music From Big Pink.” “The Band.” The Band. Capitol. Timelessness was the term critics invariably applied in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s to the music of the Band, the roots-conscious rock quintet that first gained attention as the backing group for Bob Dylan. How well does the term apply after all these years? Marvelously. There’s a tailoring in the arrangements and a soulfulness in the singing and writing on songs like “The Weight” and “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down” that makes the Band’s exploration of the American character just as cleansing and engrossing as it was almost two decades ago. Sound quality on these separate CDs: good. Both: ****
