Mehmet Terzi of Turkey broke from a pack of five runners in a dense fog on the 22nd mile and won the San Francisco Marathon by more than a minute.
Terzi, a 32-year-old marathon coach who ran for Turkey at the 1984 Olympics, had a winning time of 2 hours 14 minutes 7 seconds through the hilly course on a humid day. Mexico’s Carlos Rivas Salas was second in 2:15.09 and Sam Ngatia, a Kenyan living in El Paso, Tex., was third in 2:16.34.
Eileen Claugus of Sacramento won the women’s division in 2:39.02.
