The World : Typhoon Kills 42 in Korea

At least 42 people were killed and 66 were reported missing after Typhoon Thelma, with 79-m.p.h. winds and torrential rains, tore through South Korea, state radio reported. It said that among the dead was a family of seven who were crushed by a collapsed wall in Kwangju. Government officials said flooding left 6,152 people homeless in the southern port of Pusan alone, according to preliminary reports. Officials feared more casualties and serious property losses from the typhoon, which also triggered numerous landslides. Meteorologists reported overnight rainfalls of up to 9.2 inches.
