Deukmejian and State Budget

With Deukmejian’s latest hatchet job on education and social services for the poor and elderly, I think it is time that we finally cease and desist propagating the fiction of California as a progressive state.
California has, in fact, become one of the most regressive states in the country. It would seem obvious to blame Deukmejian and his meat ax for this, but he can’t do anything without the acquiescence of the people of California. It is they who are the real enemy of progressivism in this state, and they will have no one to blame but themselves as they reap the consequences of their acquiescence.
