WEEKEND SPORTS RUNDOWN
After a week in which millions of Americans were transfixed watching the Iran- contra hearings, television turns to the pursuit of more leisurely diversions such as baseball, boxing and golf. It is, in other words, a typical weekend for summer sports on the small screen.
Baseball comes to bat first. Digging themselves ever deeper in the National League’s Western Division, the disheveled Dodgers find themselves in Wrigley Field as they meet the Chicago Cubs today at 1 p.m. and Sunday at 11 a.m. Both games will be carried on KTTV Channel 11 and cable’s WGN.
In a rematch of last year’s championship series, the New York Mets and Houston Astros will renew old acquaintances under the Astrodome. Today’s game takes place on NBC at 10:45 a.m. (4)(36)(39), with another contest set for Sunday at 11:30 a.m. on cable’s WOR.
Of the three boxing matches scheduled this weekend, the best battle is likely to be the one that pits Duane Thomas vs. Lupe Aquino in a 12-round bout for the WBC super welterweight title. It will be covered on “Sports Sunday†at 1 p.m. (2)(8).
Another title is on the line Sunday afternoon by way of NBC’s “SportsWorld,†which will televise the 12-round Frank Tate-Troy Darrell match for the USBA middleweight crown at 1:30 p.m. (36)(39) and 2:30 p.m. (4).
Punches will be thrown on “Wide World of Sports†as well in a 10-round junior welterweight fight between Meldrick Taylor and Cubanito Perez today at 3:30 p.m. (10) and 4:30 p.m. (7)(3)(42). The broadcast also will feature the U.S. vs. China in men’s volleyball.
Gung ho for golf? NBC has the Anheuser-Busch tournament today at 1:30 p.m. (4)(36)(39), with the final round due Sunday at 11:30 a.m. (36)(39), 12:30 p.m. (4). Over on ABC, there’s the U.S. Senior Open today at 1:30 p.m. (10), 2:30 p.m. (7)(3)(42) and Sunday at 3 p.m. (7)(3)(10)(42).
