Orange County Prep Roundup : Lewis to Play in U.S. Olympic Festival

Tom Lewis, a former Mater Dei basketball star who is playing at Pepperdine, and two other former Orange County players have been named to the West basketball team that will compete in the U.S. Olympic Festival July 13-26 in North Carolina.

Mark Georgeson, 17, a 6-foot 11-inch center-forward who played for Marina High School last season and will play at the University of Arizona next season, and Kevin Walker, 19, a 6-10 forward who graduated from Brea-Olinda High in 1986 and played for UCLA last season, also have been named to the squad. Two or three players remain to be named.

Lewis, 20, was the 1985 Southern Section Player of the Year. After leading USC in scoring in his freshman season, Lewis, a 6-7 forward, announced in May 1986 that he was leaving the school. He later enrolled at Pepperdine, where he was a redshirt last season.

Jesus Oaxaca, an assistant soccer coach at Southern California College, has been named boys’ soccer coach at Esperanza High School, Jim Patterson, Esperanza athletic director, announced. Oaxaca replaces John Coppage, the walk-on coach who this spring resigned after coaching the Aztecs to their second consecutive Southern Section 3-A title game. Coppage accepted a position as Esperanza girls’ soccer coach.

Oaxaca previously has coached at Gahr High School, Cerritos College and Biola College.

Dennis Burbank, who played basketball and baseball for Valencia High School, has signed a letter of intent to attend Pepperdine in the fall.

Burbank received a basketball scholarship but also is expected to play baseball for the Waves next season.

Burbank, a 6-4 forward, averaged 16.7 points and 10.2 rebounds for the Valencia basketball team.

As a pitcher on the baseball team, he was 12-3 overall with a 1.86 earned run average. He tied Kevin Shaw of Katella as the Orange County strikeout leader during the regular season with 109. He struck out 11 in the playoffs.
