Joanna and Whitney Reed of West Los Angeles won the senior mixed doubles championship in the Los Angeles Public Parks Tennis Tournament at Griffith Park. Reed also won the men’s, age-55 singles title.
Harold Connolly, former Olympic gold medalist in the hammer throw, received a commendation from the Los Angeles Community College District Board of Trustees for establishing a throwing center for weight events at West Los Angeles College. An administrator at Santa Monica High School, Connolly set up the center to train athletes in high school and junior high school in the field events of the hammer throw, javelin, shot put and discus.
St. Monica High School volleyball players James Toomey and Dan Kolhof were named to the All-Camino Real League first team by a vote of league coaches.
Paul Wergley defeated Evans Butler in a playoff to win the A flight in the Penmar Men’s Golf Club’s July tournament at Rancho Park Golf Course. Wergley and Butler shot 78s for 18 holes, and Wergley won the playoff by parring the second extra hole. Bob Gotthoffer won the B flight with an 84.
