Low-Tech Burglars Beat Space-Age Theft Alarms

Liberty Diamond Cutters Inc. in Irvine has bars at the doors and windows, video surveillance cameras on the walls and an alarm system, all to combat sophisticated burglars.
But unsophisticated burglars are a different matter.
According to police, shortly after midnight Sunday one or more burglars went into a shop being built next to Liberty Diamond Cutters and easily poked two holes in the uncompleted plasterboard wall that separated them.
The store’s alarm went off and police arrived quickly, but not before some of the display cases had been emptied, officers said.
About $70,000 in assorted jewelry was taken, police said.
