A 2.5-mile extension of California 52, which will eventually run from La Jolla to Santee, will open to motorists Saturday after a four-hour public celebration.
The new $12.5-million freeway stretch runs from Convoy Street in Kearny Mesa west to Interstate 805. Construction is under way to extend the four-lane highway east to Santo Road in Tierrasanta with completion expected in about a year.
The road-opening ceremonies will include music, dancing, military exhibits, freeway tours, helicopters, food and drink, vintage cars and marching bands from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. Federal, state and local elected officials will participate, a California Highway Department spokesman said.
The celebration can be reached by taking Convoy north from Clairemont Mesa Boulevard to California 52, near the Miramar landfill.
