“The Wedding March.” Paramount. $29.95. Erich Von Stroheim was the monocled star whose image of Prussian severity made him the movies’ Man You Love to Hate--and a film maker whose intransigent perfectionism kept him in hot water. But in this silent film (with new organ accompaniment) from 1928, he decided to give the public “apple blossoms until they choke on them.” While not stinting on his strengths--the dissection of decadence and incredibly dense detail--he fashioned his most purely romantic role: a prince who loves a commoner (Fay Wray) and tragically loses her. The second part of “Wedding March,” removed from Stroheim’s hands, was destroyed in a 1959 Cinematheque fire; one year earlier, Cahiers du Cinema voted it the 10th greatest film of all time.
