SAN DIEGO — The Glenn Miller Orchestra will play in the Big Band Series at 7:30 tonight at the North Park Theatre.
The ‘30s dance band, famous for such hit tunes as “In the Mood” and “Moonlight Serenade,” includes some of its original members, including trumpet player Johnny Best of La Jolla and trombonist Paul Tanner of La Costa.
“Big band music is making a comeback,” said Suzanne Lawrence, spokeswoman for the California Performing Arts Centre, which is sponsoring the series along with KPQP-FM. At the series’ opener in May, which featured the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, the audience included a cross-section of people, she said, ranging from senior citizens to those in their early 30s. The Count Basie Orchestra will perform Aug. 11.
