A divided Israeli Cabinet put off a decision on whether to halt development of the U.S.-subsidized Lavi jet fighter, which has been criticized by American officials as being too expensive. Much of the debate was said to have focused on a report by Defense Minister Yitzhak Rabin. The Jerusalem Post reported that when Rabin visited Washington last week, he was offered 120 F-16C jet fighters and other incentives to halt the $2.5-billion Lavi project. A decisive vote on whether to build the Lavi is expected as early as next Sunday.
