Two separate, apparently gang-related shooting incidents in the Compton area left a 23-year-old woman dead, at least eight people wounded and two suspected street gang members under arrest, police said. Lavette Simmons died in surgery at Martin Luther King Jr. Medical Center after she was struck by gunfire from a passing car while standing with friends outside her home in the 700 block of East Elm Street. Four others were wounded. No arrests were made. Four other people were wounded earlier in another drive-by shooting in the 15300 block of Atlantic Boulevard in nearby East Compton Park, in unincorporated county territory. Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies arrested two people in connection with that incident.
