Protective Feelings Toward Reagan
Ellen Goodman offers a very credible analysis of the public mood in her column “The President Slips, and Our Respect Slides Into Protectiveness.â€
However, I believe there is also another dynamic. Several people I know will admit in private their disagreement with the present Administration in economics and political matters, especially in foreign affairs. But they have heard so often that Democrats will “tax and spend, tax and spend†that they are convinced this is so. They love the tax breaks they have received since 1981. They don’t want to lose them. They will “protect†and vote for any Republican rather than risk such a loss!
