The World : Greek Threat on U.S. Bases

Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou threatened to cancel scheduled talks to renew leases on U.S. military bases in Greece due to expire in December, 1988, unless Washington withdraws a charge that his government negotiated with terrorist organizations. Greek officials said the United States charged their country with holding talks with terrorist groups to avert possible attacks on Greek targets. U.S. Ambassador Robert V. Keeley made the allegation Thursday during a meeting with Foreign Minister Karolos Papoulias, according to a Greek official. Papandreou called the allegation “false and groundless.”
