French President Honors Times Travel Editor Hulse

Jerry Hulse, editor of The Times Travel Section, has been awarded the Legion of Honor by President Mitterand of France.
A French government official said Hulse was chosen for the prestigious award “for many years of dedicated service to (Times) readers, the travel industry, and France.”
The Legion of Honor, established by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802, has been awarded to relatively few Americans and only a handful of journalists. A recipient is only eligible “after more than 25 years of prominence in a profession,” according to the government official.
Jean-Marc Janaillac, director general of the French Government Tourist Office in New York, said Hulse “has made our country better understood and appreciated through his dedicated journalism.”
In September, Jean-Jacques Descamps, Secretary of State for Tourism of France, will visit the United States to make the formal presentation.
Hulse, who has been Travel Editor for The Times for 27 years, has received many individual honors, including the 1986 Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism Award as editor of the best newspaper travel section in the nation.
