Syria and Iranian-backed Shia Muslim militants appeared to to be backing off from a confrontation over last week’s kidnaping of U.S. journalist Charles Glass and the son of Lebanon’s defense minister. The Syrian command in Beirut reportedly had threatened to free the hostages “at all costs,” but Syria later denied that it set a deadline for their release. The reported Tuesday deadline passed without any further announcement. The Iranian-backed Hezbollah group issued a statement denying it was involved in the kidnapings as the State Department has charged.
