A hit-and-run driver on the southbound San Diego (405) Freeway in Costa Mesa struck another car early Sunday morning, fatally injuring its driver, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The victim--identified as David Mikus, 23, of Huntington Beach--was pronounced dead at Fountain Valley Regional Hospital about an hour after the accident at 1:10 a.m., CHP officials said.
Officers said the collision occurred south of the Harbor Boulevard exit. The CHP said the hit-and-run vehicle was traveling southbound on the San Diego Freeway “at a high rate of speed” when it changed lanes and swerved into the car being driven by Mikus. Mikus’ car then went out of control, striking a third car driven by Doug Hager, 27, of Orange.
The driver that caused the chain-reaction accident fled the scene, the CHP said.
