Schwartz Saves His Effort for American Final

Bobby Schwartz of Costa Mesa, the winner of the most scratch main events at Costa Mesa, chose not to ride in Friday’s speedway motorcycle races at Orange County Fairgrounds in preparation for tonight’s Nissan American Final at Long Beach Veteran’s Memorial Stadium. The race is a qualifier for the world championships.
In his absence, Mike Faria, who has finished second to Schwartz on numerous occasions, won Friday’s four-lap scratch main race in front of 3,100. Newport Beach’s Phil Collins finished second and Riverside’s Steve Lucero was third.
Faria will join Schwartz in Long Beach tonight as both drivers compete for the top five places to advance to the next elimination round of the World Speedway Motorcycle Championship at Bradford, England, July 5.
In Friday’s other events, Ventura’s Walt Farnum won the handicap main event and Jim Blan captured first in support class main.
