Thatcher Cites Kipling in Pledge of Humility

LONDON — Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, reelected to a third consecutive term and pledging to get on with the job with a sense of “great humility,” borrowed a verse from Rudyard Kipling to make her point Friday.
During a British Broadcasting Corp. interview, Thatcher said she admired the poet and storyteller, who was closely identified with Britain’s imperial era, and she quoted from his 1897 poem “Recessional:”
The tumult and the shouting dies;
The Captains and the Kings depart:
Still stands Thine ancient sacrifice,
An humble and a contrite heart.
