BART Board Backs New Inland Service

SAN FRANCISCO — Bay Area Rapid Transit District directors voted Thursday in favor of a plan that could extend the rail system inland to Davis and Stockton and use high-speed trains.
BART directors voted 6 to 1 in favor of the multibillion-dollar proposal by director Wilfred Ussery, saying that financing for the hundreds of miles of new tracks has not been worked out.
“The director, who has been one of the prime movers, did ask that the board pass a broad motion that would include the possibility of such an extension in the future,” said Mike Healy, BART director of public affairs.
Ussery indicated that state and federal aid may be available if the controversial super collider atom smasher is built in Stockton or Davis.
