A school van carrying nine handicapped children smashed into a utility pole on a Pomona street Thursday afternoon after the driver was apparently stricken with a fatal heart attack, authorities said.
The California Highway Patrol said three of the children, all from Claremont, sustained minor injuries. The driver, Everette Brady, 72, of Pomona, was pronounced dead at Pomona Valley Community Hospital.
The CHP said the van, owned by Laidlaw Transit Co. of Upland, was going north on Garey Avenue when it suddenly veered to the side.
“Witnesses said that it hit the curb three or four times before hitting a high-voltage pole,” CHP Officer Mike MacBean said.
The nine children, who attend special education classes in the Claremont Unified School District, were wearing seat belts, MacBean said.
