The Internal Revenue Service announced that it is more than doubling the number of areas in which taxpayers may file their federal tax returns electronically with the promise of less paper work and faster refunds. Next year’s returns may be filed by computer through professional preparers in all or part of 14 states, including California. Under the electronic system, a tax preparer calculates a person’s tax liability and transmits the information to the IRS by way of a telephone line, and the taxpayer’s signature is obtained on a separate sheet. Taxpayers can also have their refunds deposited directly into their bank accounts.
