L.A. new-music advocate Betty Freeman and violinist Isaac Stern will be honored by the American Symphony Orchestra League with its 1987 Gold Baton Award at the league’s 42nd annual conference this week at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City. Freeman, who has commissioned, supported and presented more than 30 contemporary composers, will543319328Wednesday. Stern, who has recorded more than 200 works and is president of the Carnegie Hall Corp., will be honored at the closing luncheon Friday. The Gold Baton is considered among the highest honors for service to music and the arts; previous winners include Leonard Bernstein, Leopold Stokowski, Aaron Copland, Arthur Fiedler and Danny Kaye.
