Opposition lawmakers began a three-day hunger strike in South Korea’s National Assembly chamber after the governing party blocked a special session to probe the alleged police torture killing of a student. The main opposition group, the Reunification Democratic Party, passed a resolution accusing the ruling Democratic Justice Party of still trying to cover up the Jan. 14 death of student Park Chong Chol. An outcry over the incident has forced President Chun Doo Hwan to fire his prime minister and a number of other top officials.
