The World : Divorce OKd in Argentina

Argentina’s House of Deputies, despite opposition by the Roman Catholic Church, gave final approval to the Senate’s version of a divorce bill, which was then sent to President Raul Alfonsin for his signature. Alfonsin has said he will not oppose the measure, which allows Argentines--90% of whom profess to be Catholic--to dissolve marriages and remarry for the first time since the mid-1950s when a similar law was approved but quickly overturned. Backers of the law said it could benefit nearly a million of the nation’s 31 million inhabitants who are separated from spouses.
