$85,000 Offer Buys Copy of Constitution

WASHINGTON — An original printing of the first draft of the Constitution was auctioned Saturday for $85,000--the only bid for the document.
An unidentified buyer made the uncontested offer during an auction in which signed letters, canceled checks, books and various mementos of Thomas Jefferson, Dwight D. Eisenhower and John Hancock drew greater interest, the Washington Post reported.
The Constitution draft is one of 10 copies known to have survived from the 60 originally printed, said Dale Sorenson, president of Waverly Auctions, which presided over the sale. Most copies are held by libraries and other institutions.
